In a recent Science Advances study scientists have confirmed that climate change is now a major contributing factor to a global increase in the rat population.
As temperatures rise, rats are able to survive for longer periods, the harsh weather conditions that would usually deter population growth are no longer an issue for these new breeds of rats who are now surviving over winter periods.
Food is also more prevalent in milder conditions and the extra intake no doubt boosts reproductive bouts which in turn is accelerating population growth.
While there is an overall general increase in the rat population, some areas are being hit harder than others. Washington DC for example, has a rat population that is growing 1.5 times faster than New York City. The difference can be largely explained by the active steps that NYC has taken to keep these rodents in check.
While cities across the world have a responsibility to help control the population increase, the everyday person can play a vital role by making sure that their properties do not support rat population growth; simple steps such as securing food waste and making sure it remains contained should not be underestimated. Remove food sources and the environment becomes a lot less attractive for these rats.
Even though the situation is being managed, it seems likely that its here to stay. Traps and poison are no longer an effective answer and prevention is key.
If you’ve read our previous news, you will know that rats are frequently found living in the sewers and are confident swimmers who make light work of navigating pipes full of water and often end up (no doubt unintentionally) in a toilet bowl. A search for food and an attraction to the light of a seat up toilet can be enough to encourage them in that direction.
This is where the MultiFlap valve is unbeatable as a rat deterrent to sewer rats from entering your home. The one way non-return valve completely blocks off access to your toilet - read more here.
