RATS AS BIG AS CATS RUN RIOT IN BIRMINGHAM UK

While Unite continue to take industrial action over Birmingham City Council’s decision to remove the Waste Recycling and Collection Officer (WRCO) roles, rubbish continues to mount.

Tempted not only by the prospect of an easy meal, but also with new found places to hide among the bin bags, rats are thriving in the Second City. Depending on the source, the rats have been described as ‘as big as cats’ and even ‘the size of dachshunds’

Towers of black bags are building all over the city while the council and union continue to argue, with people adding to the unsightly piles of stenching waste. Agency workers have been bought in to try and clear up the backlog and some residents have been sharing videos on social media of the rats scattering as the bags are disturbed.

Together, BCC and Unite have unwittingly created near perfect environment in which rats can not only survive but thrive. Rats can have up to 12 litters per year with as many as 13 babies per litter, this means that one single rat can have 156 babies per year!  

The rats will tend to come up from the sewers to feed and return to breed, there are literally millions of rats beneath us in the winding tunnels of the sewers. While they may be preferring the smorgasbord on offer at the bin bag mountains, the increasing population of rats will no doubt also make an increased appearance into homes.

Rats are confident swimmers who make light work of navigating pipes full of water and often end up (no doubt unintentionally) in a toilet bowl. A search for food and an attraction to the light of a seat up toilet can be enough to encourage them in that direction.
